The original game in the series set a strong foundation as far as gameplay, but was not as ambitious with its single player offerings. The focus was more on tactics and micro than on sweeping strategic movements. The sequel further streamlined base creation (you have just one building), and slimmed down the army sizes. Subsequent expansions reintroduced Chaos and the Imperial Guard to play. Over the course of a match you may very well end up controlling hundreds of units, with infantry being grouped into squads, and vehicles being individually controlled.ĭawn of War II started off allowing you to play as the Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, and Tyranids, a race that likely served as inspiration for the Zerg in StarCraft. Overall, each race is quite distinctive and has its own set of units. This was later expanded by expansions to nine (!) total races, with the Imperial Guard, Necrons, Tau, Dark Eldar, and Sisters of Battle being added to the field. The original game featured four races originally: the Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Eldar, and Orks (plus the Imperial Guard making a brief appearance in the campaign as controllable auxiliaries).

This makes Dawn of War games fast paced, and focused on the fun parts of strategy games: killing the bad guys. Additionally, replacement units for your squad can be purchased anywhere, so long as one unit in the squad is alive (though this changed in the sequel somewhat).

Rather than mining gold or minerals, resources are generated passively based on how much territory you hold (which gives "requisition"), and how many power generators you have built ("power"). What Dawn of War does differently than other strategy titles is that it streamlines resource acquisition and base building. Over the past couple of weeks I've played through most of this series (clearing that backlog!), and thought I'd share my thoughts on each one. The Dawn of War franchise is comprised of seven RTS games (released from 2004 to 2011) set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
